Can we claim Gift Aid on Facebook donations? (we have heard we can't)
Disclaimer: Please do NOT take this as official guidance from HMRC. The following is based on our understanding from talking to GivePanel clients in the UK.
-
Notes from the Charity Tax Group circulated after the meeting which took place on 4th December 2018 stated " Working group members were told that the following message had been received from HMRC’s Steve Carroll: “I now have confirmation from Facebook that the key eligibility questions have been incorporated into the donation process so if you can relay to CTG members that spreadsheets from Facebook detailing donations made can be accepted (subject to the relevant data being contained therein).”
- The Charity Tax Group have confirmed that the email from Steve Carrol was received on the 24th November 2018.
- However since then HMRC have (allegedly) some UK charities not to claim so therefore we think it is because of an issue with the lack of an audit trail (reconciliation) and not the Gift Aid statement itself (however this is guesswork)
- We are working with all the stakeholders we can to resolve this for UK charities and will try keep our clients updated.
- If you have any more information from HMRC about this issue please do contact support.
