Reconciling usage of discount codes in GivePanel Events and Stripe

We know it’s important for you to understand how many times a discount code has been used by your registrants. This article will explain the difference between what you will see in your GivePanel account and what you will see on Stripe.

How to report on discount code usage on GivePanel Events:

  1. Navigate to your event on GivePanel Events and open the Dashboard

  2. Your discount code usage can be found by reporting on either Registrations or Payments

  3. When you download either your Registration or Payments report ensure you include ‘Ticket Price Amount’, ‘Payment Discount Amount’, ‘Payment Discount Code’, ‘Net Payment Amount’ and ‘Gross Payment Amount’ (as well as any other data you need to see).

  4. You will then be able to see the following csv headers:

    • ticketPriceAmount - the original cost of the ticket

    • paymentDiscountCode - the discount code if used for that transaction

    • paymentDiscountAmount - the monetary amount that was discounted

    • netPaymentAmount - the amount paid without VAT (if VAT applied)

    • grossPaymentAmount - the total discounted amount paid including VAT (if VAT applied)

  5. This allows you to see how many times certain codes have been used and how those discounts have affected your ticketing income.

N.B. Discount Codes can only be applied to tickets purchased and not products or merchandise.

How to report on discount code usage in Stripe:

  1. Stripe’s coupon (discount code) settings can’t be changed after creation

  2. When a discount code is set up in GivePanel, we pass information to Stripe to tell it which products (i.e. which of your tickets) this discount code can apply to

  3. If you then create a new ticket type after setting the event live, we have to refresh the information we send to Stripe regarding which products the new discount code can apply to - to do this we have to delete the information regarding the old discount code

  4. Therefore if you were to then report on how many times the discount code has been used it would only show you information on the new code and it’s usage - the usage of the old code would not be available

Example scenario:

  • Discount Code ‘SAVE5’ is used 5 times by an adult ticket registration

  • Stripe will show you ‘SAVE5’ has been used 5 times

  • A child ticket is created after the event goes live and the ‘SAVE5’ discount code is used 3 times

  • Stripe will now show you ‘SAVE5’ has been used 3 times - it will not show you that it has been used 8 times

The best way to report on discount code usage is to report from GivePanel this will give you the accurate usage.
