DIY campaigns support In Memory fundraising, making it easy for supporters to create fundraisers in memory of someone and for charities to identify and steward them appropriately.

DIY campaigns are designed for supporters who want to fundraise their way, whether that’s a bake sale, a birthday or anniversary, a personal challenge, or an activity of their own choosing, while keeping registrations and fundraising pages organised in GivePanel.

In Memory functionality is reflected across DIY forms, DIY email journeys, and fundraiser records, and also enables you to steward organic In Memory JustGiving fundraisers too.

What’s included with In Memory DIY

1. Capturing In Memory fundraising at registration

Option to add to DIY forms the option “Are you fundraising in memory of someone?” question.

  • Supporters can select Yes or No during registration

  • If a supporter selects Yes, a second field appears asking:
    “Who are you remembering?”

  • Supporters can enter the name of the person they are fundraising in memory of

  • The In Memory response and name provided are stored against the fundraiser record

2. How In Memory fundraisers appear across GivePanel and JustGiving

When a supporter selects Yes to fundraising in memory of someone and creates a JustGiving fundraiser through your DIY campaign, their In Memory details are reflected across both JustGiving and GivePanel.

On JustGiving:

  • The fundraiser is created as an In Memory fundraiser

  • The name entered in “Who are you remembering?” is displayed on the fundraising page

On GivePanel:

  • The fundraiser record is marked as In Memory

  • The name of the person being remembered is shown on the record

  • This applies to fundraisers created via DIY and those picked up via Smart Match

This makes In Memory fundraisers easy to identify and steward across both platforms.

3. Tailoring and personalising DIY emails for In Memory fundraisers

DIY email journeys allow you to tailor communications for supporters who are fundraising in memory of someone.

  • An In Memory condition can be used to send emails only to In Memory fundraisers

  • This allows you to create separate email paths for In Memory and non In Memory supporters

You can also personalise email content using the In Memory name provided by the supporter.

  • An In Memory merge tag is available in the email editor

  • This dynamically inserts the name of the person the supporter is fundraising in memory of

  • This ensures emails are both relevant and sensitively personalised

Common use cases include:

  • A more compassionate welcome email

  • Alternative stewardship or follow up messaging

  • Different guidance or resources for In Memory supporters

4. Automatically enrolling organic In Memory JustGiving fundraisers into your DIY campaign

When Smart Match is turned on, GivePanel automatically checks for organic JustGiving fundraisers (those created outside of the GivePanel integration) after each daily JustGiving import.

If an organic fundraiser’s JustGiving event type matches the event type of one of your DIY campaigns, Smart Match will:

  • Create a registration and enrol the supporter into the DIY campaign’s email journey

  • Attribute their fundraiser to the correct DIY campaign so totals appear in your dashboard

  • Allow you to easily filter and manage these fundraisers in the Fundraiser List

When Smart Match picks up an organic In Memory fundraiser, GivePanel will also:

  • Apply the In Memory flag where applicable

  • Create the associated registration with the In Memory status included

  • Enrol the supporter into the correct DIY email journey path

This ensures organic In Memory fundraisers are:

  • Picked up correctly

  • Treated consistently

  • Sent appropriate communications without manual intervention
